Article ID: KB5465 KB Last Updated: 22 Jul 2010Version: 4.0
Summary:
Why Can't I Login to a Windows 2000 Server?
Symptoms:
Environment:
  • Kerberos is used for authentication when active directory is configured.
  • Windows 2000 server
  • Windows 2000 domain

Symptoms & Errors:
  • Cannot Locate Domain Controller in Kerberos Authentication Environment
  • Cannot login to Windows 2000 server
  • Slow login and gets error message
no domain controller is available
Solution:
note: The following article applies to all versions of ScreenOS.

There are two possible reasons why a Windows 2000 login is failing:

note: Make sure that the DNS server used by the client will respond to the DNS queries.

Example: The IP address of the domain controller is 192.168.1.10 and the nslookup output would be:

C:\WINNT>nslookup [Enter]
Default Server:  vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net
Address:  4.2.2.2
> server 192.168.1.10 [Enter]
Default Server:  [192.168.1.10]
Address:  192.168.1.10

> set type=srv [Enter]
> _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.adtac.com [Enter]
Server:  [192.168.1.10]
Address:  192.168.1.10
_ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.adtac.com  SRV service location:
          priority       = 0
          weight         = 100
          port           = 389
          svr hostname   = adsrv.adtac.com
adsrv.adtac.com internet address = 192.168.1.10
note: If the nslookup does not return the proper DNS records, the problem is most likely on the Windows 2000 Advanced Server configuration.

Active Directory depends on DNS to resolve the name and to locate the domain controller. A new type of record is then created on the DNS, called a Resource Record.
