Summary:
Cannot import spd file on Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME
Symptoms:
Environment:
  • Export spd file from Windows 2000 or Windows XP machine
  • Import spd file on another Windows 2000 machine is okay

Symptoms & Errors:
  • Cannot import spd file on Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows ME
  • Problems with VPN after exporting SPD from Windows 98 to Windows XP

Solution:

Windows 2000 and Windows 95/98/ME have different registry formats.  The spd file needs to be modified when importing into a Windows 95/98/ME machine.

  1. Edit the spd file with WordPad
  2. Replace the entire first line with "REGEDIT4"
  3. Save the file as a text file.  It will default to a unicode text document
  4. Import the file on the Windows 95/98/ME platform
