[ScreenOS] Firewall device 'STATUS' LED is blinking red or amber

Article ID: KB5973 KB Last Updated: 21 Mar 2020Version: 5.0

Understanding when a Firewall device 'STATUS' LED blinks red or amber; and when to contact support.

The firewall device LED labeled 'STATUS' on the front panel of the firewall is blinking red or amber.

Reasons for Red and Amber status lights:
  • RED -- When the device powers on, a set of cryptographic algorithm self-tests are performed. These tests run after the hardware self-tests are complete and before the system loads the device configuration files. When the device completes these self-tests on power up, the system generates a message that displays the results. If the self tests fail, the device halts; no traffic is passed and the status LED blinks red.
  • AMBER -- The device status LED will turn amber when the device writes to the flash card. It is possible that when the LED was amber, the firewall was writing event logs to the flash card.
The reasons can vary, depending on the type of Security device. The LEDs are described in the Hardware Technical Documentation:
  1. Go to NetScreen Series Technical Documentation
  2. Click the Hardware Documentation link for your specific device.
  3. Select the Installers Guide or Hardware Installation and Configuration (depending on the device model)

If the firewall device 'STATUS' LED is blinking red continuously, then an error has been detected. Contact your technical support representative.
