Differences in the Session Table between the Master & Backup running NSRP

Article ID: KB6180 KB Last Updated: 29 Sep 2020Version: 4.0
Differences in the Session Table between the HA Primary & Backup
What are the differences between the Session Table of the Primary & Backup in NSRP Active/Passive mode?

The Primary's session table can be different than the Backup's Session table. The Primary can have both newly created sessions and existing sessions that are "refreshed", but the backup will only have newly created sessions pushed from the Primary times a multiplier.

In NSRP Active Passive mode, only newly created sessions will get pushed to the backup's session table times a multiplier of 8. The session in the Primary can be refreshed, BUT this same session that has been "pushed" to the Backup's session table will not be. These sessions that are pushed to the Backup's Session table will not be refreshed, but will stay in the session table.

Once that session in the Backup's session table expires, that session will be marked for "garbage" and cleared from the Backup's session table.

Also, once a session is closed on the primary and marked for "cleanup", the corresponding session on the backup will be closed and marked for "cleanup" as well and will be cleared from the session table.

Note:  For more information on how the session timeout is adjusted after a failover occurs, refer to KB10027.
