Article ID: KB6437 KB Last Updated: 30 May 2019Version: 6.0
Summary:

Can I import a configuration from one device into another?

Symptoms:

I want to save time and errors by copying the configuration from one device to another.

Solution:

Importing the ScreenOS configuration of a device into a different type of device is not recommended because interface naming does vary.

However, you may make a copy of the configuration from one device, modify it, and load it on a new device that is the same type.

The following procedure may be used.

  • Assume device A and device B are both the same type of firewall running ScreenOS.
  • Device A contains a working configuration.
  • Device B is a new device that you want to bring online with a similar configuration to device A.

Note: In case you decide to copy the configuration from one device to another device of same type, please also ensure that licenses are also same on both devices. Let us consider Device A and Device B are of same type from the example above. Now, let' say Device A has a license to support 5 vsys and contains vsys related configuration. Now, the Device B does not have the vsys license and in this case if you try to load the config from Device A which contains vsys related config to Device B, it will fail to load. This is applicable to all the licensed features like AV, Antispam, Vrouters etc.

Perform the following steps:

  1. On device A, enter the command get config.  (Also note the ScreenOS version it is running.) Copy the output into a .txt editor, like notepad, and save the file, i.e. device_a_config.txt.
Note: If device A's config is too long, then the command "get config" may take lot of time to print it and the output may get overwritten on the display console. In this case, use the command  get config > tftp <IP-Address> <Filename>  to redirect the output to a TFTP server. You can also refer to : KB6240 - How do I save or backup configuration file in ScreenOS  .
  2. Make a copy of device_a_config.txt and call it device_b_config.txt.
  3. In device_b_config.txt, change the host name, IP addresses, management info, snmp, password, etc, and save the file.
  4. On device B, load the same ScreenOS version as device A.  Then load the config device_b_config.txt. For instructions on loading the config, refer to KB4171 - Uploading a Configuration from the WebUI or KB4196 - Uploading a Configuration from the CLI. Make sure a PC is attached to the console to view any errors that may occur.
