Solution:

Yes there is.   There are three methods to upgrade a NetScreen device.  They are via WebUI, CLI, and interrupting the bootup sequence at startup, and upgrading via TFTP.

Upgrade Requirements using WebUI:

  • Root or read-write privileges to the NetScreen device
  • Network access to the NetScreen device from the management PC
  • Internet browser installed on PC
  • New ScreenOS image file (downloaded from the NetScreen web site and saved locally on PC)

Upgrade Requirements using CLI

  • Root or read-write privileges to the NetScreen device
  • Console connection or Telnet access to the NetScreen device from the management PC
  • TFTP server installed on management PC
  • New ScreenOS image file (downloaded from the NetScreen web site and saved to the TFTP server directory on management PC)

Upgrade Requirements by Interrupting the Bootup Sequence at Startup

  • Root or read-write privileges to the NetScreen device
  • TFTP server installed on management PC
  • Ethernet connection from management PC to the NetScreen device (to transfer data, namely from the TFTP server on management PC)
  • Console connection or telnet access to the NetScreen device from the management PC
  • New ScreenOS image file (downloaded from the NetScreen web site and saved to the TFTP server directory on management PC)

Downgrade Requirements - Only possible using CLI

  • Root or read-write privileges to the NetScreen device
  • Console connection or Telnet access to the NetScreen device from the management PC
  • Ethernet connection from management PC to the NetScreen device (to transfer data, namely from the TFTP server on management PC)
