Restrictions with redundant Interface on the NetScreen-5000

How to define redundant interface on NS5200 and NS5400

When setting up redundant interfaces, the members must reside on the same board.  The two ports cannot be on separate boards.

Redundant interfaces can only be defined on the same ASIC chip.  On the 8G and 8G2 boards, Gig port 1 through 4 uses one ASIC (ASIC 0), while Gig ports 5 through 8 uses the other ASIC (ASIC 1).  When defining a redundant interface, the members must include either ports 1 through 4, or 5 through 8.  For example, you can define a redundant interface that includes e2/1 and e2/2, but you cannot define a redundant interface that includes e2/1 and e2/5.

On the 10 Gig boards (10GXE), redundant interfaces are not supported.  This is because 1 ASIC chip is used for each 10 Gig interface, and redundant ports can only be defined within a single ASIC, and cannot span different interface boards.
