This article explains how ScreenOS implements the 'Configuration Rollback' so that LKG or default config is loaded.

Symptoms:

FAQ: In Screen OS5.0rx, how does ScreenOS implement "Configuration Rollback" so that the LKG or default configuration gets loaded?

Solution:

Every time the system boots, it checks the rollback environment variable before loading the config file. If the value is '"no'", '"'" or this variable does not exist, then the system knows cfg rollback is not enabled, so it will try to load the default config file. If the value is '"yes'", we need to check for an LKG file.

If the LKG file does not exist, the system will try to load the default config.

If the LKG file exists, the system will load that instead.

Either way, the system logs the rollback action into the system event log.
