Article ID: KB7801 KB Last Updated: 31 Aug 2010Version: 3.0
Summary:
Setting up throughput testing through a NetScreen using Ixia or Smartbits
Symptoms:
Not able to pass traffic from one Ixia or Smartbits card to the other
Solution:

When performing a test with either Ixia or Smartbits, you need to make sure the port on either Ixia or Smartbits has the destination Mac manually configured.

Example:

In this example, Ixia Port 1 is assigned an IP address of 192.168.1.254, and a MAC address of 000100000000. Ixia Port 2 is assigned an IP address of 1.1.1.254/24 and a MAC address of 000100000100.  The trust port of the NetScreen is configured with an IP address 192.168.1.1/24 and a MAC address 0010db7d78d2, and the untrust interface is configured with an IP address of 1.1.1.1/24 and a MAC address of 0010db7d78d1.

On Ixia, make sure Port 1 has a destination MAC address of 0010db7d78d2, and Port 2 has a destination MAC address of 0010db7d78d1.

On the NetScreen, manually set an arp entry for Port 2 of the Ixia:

set arp 1.1.1.254 000100000100 untrust

Running a snoop on the NetScreen should reveal the following with traffic stream from trust to untrust:

204286.0: 2(i):000100000000->0010db7d78d2/0800
              192.168.1.254->1.1.1.254/17, tlen=179
              vhl=45, tos=00, id=0, frag=0000, ttl=64
              udp:ports 63->63, len=159

204286.0: 1(o):0010db7d78d1->000100000100/0800
              192.168.1.254->1.1.1.254/17, tlen=179
              vhl=45, tos=00, id=0, frag=0000, ttl=63
              udp:ports 63->63, len=159
