NSRP Backup Device Prompts You to Save Configuration with No Changes Made

Article ID: KB7803 KB Last Updated: 11 Aug 2010Version: 4.0

Environment is NSRP active-backup cluster.  Console message "Configuration modified, save? [y]/n" is reported.

Logging into the console of the backup device prompts you to save configuration, even though no configuration changes were made.

When an NTP update is performed on the primary, it will automatically sync to the backup, by issuing a "set clock" command.  Since the backup has a set command, the box thinks that  there has been a configuration change.  When this happens, if you exit without saving, it will prompt you for the following:

Configuration modified, save? [y]/n

When using NTP for NSRP, it is recommended to disable NTP syncing from primary to backup.  Use the following CLI command:

set ntp no-ha-sync

This will no longer sync the NTP updates from primary to backup.  You will also want to configure a separate manage-ip for each VSI that communicates to the NTP server.  The backup device will obtain its own NTP updates, so that the accuracy of the system clock is maintained at the maximum.

Note: In 5.0.0r9, there was a bug where NTP updates were being blocked from the backup.  This issue has been fixed in 5.0.0r10, so you may not have seen this behavior previously.
