[ScreenOS] The maximum number of ECMP routes

  [KB7805] Show Article Properties

Summary:
The article provides information about the maximum number of static routes that can be created for the same network segment via different interfaces with the same preference and metric.
Symptoms:
In a NetScreen device, you can configure a maximum of 4 static routes for the same segment via four different interfaces with the same preference and metric. In case you try to configure a fifth route, the ECMP Limit Exceeded error message is generated.

A sample configuration is as follows:
set route 1.1.1.1/32 interface tunnel.1
set route 1.1.1.1/32 interface tunnel.2
set route 1.1.1.1/32 interface tunnel.3
set route 1.1.1.1/32 interface tunnel.4
When the set route 1.1.1.1/32 interface tunnel.5 is run, the following error messages are generated:

In the CLI:

IN the WebUI:

Note: These error messages are independent of whether or not, the ECMP feature is enabled on the device.
Cause:
The maximum allowed ECMP Routes on the device is 4. So, the number of routes that can be configured for the same destination network is 4.
Solution:
This feature is by design on a NetScreen device. This has been designed, as multiple routes to the same destination should be created, only when the traffic can load balanced. As the maximum allowed ECMP routes is 4, the number of routes that can be configured is 4.
