Advertising a default route in RIP with a lower metric

Article ID: KB7823 KB Last Updated: 11 Aug 2010Version: 5.0
Summary:
How does the command 'set advertise-def-route metric' work in the RIP instance?
Symptoms:

Solution:
The command “set advertise-def-route metric <metric_num>” in the RIP instance (i.e. set vr <vr> protocol rip), only advertises:
  • The "non-RIP default route"present in the VR’s routing table
  • Sets the metric for the" non-RIP default route" to the value specified with the above command (only when it is advertised).

note: The default route learned via RIP will be advertised as expected with or without the "set advertise-def-route" command.   The metric configured with the above command will have no affect on these routes advertised.

note: If there is no non-RIP default route present in the VR's routing table, this command will not take effect, even if configured. This is by design.
