[Archive] Does Vonage VoIP Service use SIP?

Article ID: KB7838 KB Last Updated: 23 Aug 2010Version: 3.0
Vonage uses Linksys phone adapter for Voice Over IP (VoIP).

Vonage does use SIP, but when the phone is placed behind a NetScreen in NAT mode, it embeds the SIP messages within the payload of a UDP Port 10000 packet.  SIP registration and control is handled in a session using UDP Port 10000, and actual voice transmission is sent over a random UDP port in the range of 10000 to 20000.  It does not use the SIP ALG.  However, if the NetScreen is in route mode, it will use the normal SIP ports on 5060 and 5061.  Vonage also requires DNS, NTP, and TFTP for proper communications.

For proper firewall configuration to allow Vonage VoIP traffic, define a custom service as follows:

set service "vonage" protocol udp src-port 0-65535 dst-port 5060-5061
set service "vonage" + udp src-port 0-65535 dst-port 123-123
set service "vonage" + udp src-port 0-65535 dst-port 69-69
set service "vonage" + udp src-port 0-65535 dst-port 53-53
set service "vonage" + udp src-port 0-65535 dst-port 10000-20000

Note: Running debug sip all does not provide any useful information since it does not use the SIP ALG.
