[Junos] Subscription - Register and Install

  [KB9731] Show Article Properties

Subscription services, such as Antivirus (AV), Deep Inspection (DI), Web Filtering, and Anti-Spam, must be registered in the Juniper Subscription system before the service will start. Subscription keys are tied to the entitlement server and are retrieved from the server by the device. This article describes how to register and install a subscription license.

For Junos perpetual (permanent) licenses or non-Junos licenses, refer to:

My license key order has completed, and I have received an Authorization Code document for generating a subscription license key for a Juniper product running Junos OS. How do I generate and install my subscription license?

Note: Some Juniper documentation uses the term activate; we use the term register. They mean the same thing.

To register and install a subscription, follow the steps below.

  1. Complete Requirements
  2. Register Subscription
  3. Install Subscription

Step 1:

To register a subscription, you will need the following:

  • An account to access the Customer Support Center or Partner Center. If you do not have an account, go to: Create User Account. (For login help, see Login Assistance.)
  • The product Serial Number.
  • The Juniper Authorization Code Certificate. This document is emailed to the email address provided to Juniper on the Purchase Order. The Authorization Code is a 16 character code; see sample.

Step 2:

  1. Log in to the Juniper Networks Product & Subscription Registration Tool.

  2. Select the appropriate tool and enter the Product Serial Number(s) and the Authorization Code(s). For partners registering on behalf of your customers, an end user's e-mail address is required.

    • The Authorization Codes are case sensitive.

    • The tool allows multiple Authorization Codes for a single serial number and accumulates the duration for each code entered. This is subject to Juniper’s allowed maximum for the specific type of subscription.

  3. Click on Register. In instances where your products are not registered, the tool will prompt you to provide the physical address of the install location.

Once registered, you will be presented with a confirmation page. You will also receive an e-mail containing the details of the Product and Subscription registration.

Step 3:

Subscription license keys can be installed using the automatic or the manual method. The automatic method is most common; it requires that the Juniper device be connected the Internet and have DNS configured.

Note: If the Juniper device does not have connectivity to the Internet or does not have DNS configured, manually generate the subscription license keys using the instructions in KB17671 - Manually generate license key for a subscription service, before continuing to install the subscription. Then proceed with the "Manual Install method from the terminal" below.

Automatic method:  (most common)

  1. Log in to the console of the Juniper device. Important: Confirm that the Juniper device is connected to the Internet and has DNS configured.
  2. Run the following command:

root > request system license update

For more information, see the technical documentation on the command request system license update.

  3. To verify that the key has been added, run the following command to verify:

    root> show system license

Manual Install method:

From the terminal, install the subscription license keys with the manual method using the command:

root> request system license add terminal
[Type ^D at a new line to end input,
enter blank line between each license key]
Paste the license key and press enter
Type Ctrl+D
