[Junos] Subscription - Register and Install

Article ID: KB9731 KB Last Updated: 30 Sep 2020Version: 13.0

Subscription services, such as Antivirus (AV), Deep Inspection (DI), Web Filtering, and Anti-Spam, must be registered in the Juniper Subscription system before the service will start. Subscription keys are tied to the entitlement server and are retrieved from the server by the device. This article describes how to register and install a subscription license.

For Junos perpetual (permanent) licenses or non-Junos licenses, refer to:

My license key order has completed, and I have received an Activation Code document for generating a subscription license key for a Juniper product running Junos OS. How do I activate my subscription license?

Note: Some Juniper documentation uses the term activate; we use the term register. They mean the same thing.

To activate a subscription, follow the steps below.

  1. Complete Requirements
  2. Activate Subscription
  3. Install Subscription

Step 1:  Complete Requirements

To activate a subscription, you will need the following:

  • An account to access the Customer Support Center or Partner Center. If you do not have an account, go to: Create User Account. (For login help, see Login Assistance.)
  • The product Serial Number.
  • The Juniper Software Entitlement Certificate. This document is emailed to the email address provided to Juniper on the Purchase Order. The Authorization Code is a 17 character code; see sample.

Step 2: Activate Subscription

  1. Log in to the Juniper Networks Agile Licensing Portal.

  2. Enter your Activation Code, select Activate and follow the on-screen instructions. Activation Codes can be used multiple times until the quantity ordered has been activated. For partners activating on behalf of your customers, an end customer's e-mail address is required.

  • The Activation Codes are case sensitive.
  • Activation Codes which are linked to your Juniper Networks Company Account and awaiting activation will also be visible in the Entitlements section of the Juniper Agile Licensing Portal.
  • Both perpetual and subscription software licenses are activated using the Juniper Networks Agile Licensing Portal. Some products require a Hardware Device Serial Number in order to activate. The Juniper Networks Agile Licensing Portal will also register products to your company during the activation process.
  • The Hardware Device Serial Number is an alphanumeric code used to identify your Juniper Networks device during the activation process. You can find the serial number by executing the CLI command, "show chassis hardware,' or through J-Web Monitor Dashboard.
  • For further assistance locating your device serial number please refer to the knowledge base article at
  1. Click on Activate. It will then route you to the Product Registration Page. You may use either an existing location or use the default address. Click the submit button to confirm the registration.
  2. The Confirmation Page is displayed to confirm that the product is activated. You may either email or download the activation code as well. Click “I’m Done”to return to the Home Page.

Step 3: Install Subscription

Subscription license keys can be installed using the automatic or the manual method. The automatic method is most common; it requires that the Juniper device be connected the Internet and have DNS configured.

Note: If the Juniper device does not have connectivity to the Internet or does not have DNS configured, manually generate the subscription license keys using the Juniper Networks Agile Licensing Portal. before continuing to install the subscription. Then proceed with the "Manual Install method from the terminal" below.

Automatic method:  (most common)

  1. Log in to the console of the Juniper device. Important: Confirm that the Juniper device is connected to the Internet and has DNS configured.
  2. Run the following command:

root > request system license update

For more information, see the technical documentation on the command request system license update.

  3. To verify that the key has been added, run the following command to verify:

    root> show system license

Manual Install method:

From the terminal, install the subscription license keys with the manual method using the command:

root> request system license add terminal
[Type ^D at a new line to end input,
enter blank line between each license key]
Paste the license key and press enter
Type Ctrl+D
