NSM directive fails with a Java error message similar to"java null.pointer.exception error"

Article ID: KB9844 KB Last Updated: 27 May 2010Version: 4.0

The job manager output window shows a Java error message when trying to contact the device.  Error message: "java null.pointer.exception error"

Symptoms & Errors:

  •   Error message: "java null.pointer.exception error"

The java null.pointer.exception error is caused by an internal failure while processing the directive by the directive handler process.  The problem could be due to some data  in the database, returned by the device that NSM considers invalid, or could be an issue with the NSM software.

The error message is generic.  To find more detail information about the specific portion of the code that generated the error message, look at the log file from either the GuiSvr or DevSvr directive handler.  KB9851 - Where can I find the related error logs when processing directives in NSM?     If not enough information is found in the logs, it may be necessary to also enable debug mode KB9840 - How to enable debug mode for NSM processes.
