How to enable Skype services to go through Juniper Firewalls

Article ID: KB9974 KB Last Updated: 12 Aug 2010Version: 3.0

Skype is very peculiar; as it does not use a standard Voice over IP protocol. The reason for that is the evasion technique it uses to bypass firewalls / filters / NAT / etc.

In order to enable Skype traffic to go through the firewall it is necessary to have a policy/policies with minimum services enabled.

Skype calls are not established between peers residing between the firewall.

To resolve the situation, make sure there are policies to allow the traffic generated from both Skype peers. The policies should include the corresponding IP addresses of the peers.

Check the Skype web site for information on specific services required in the policies.
