[SRX] How to install license after registering product and to change renew condition

Article ID: KB14103 KB Last Updated: 07 Jun 2019Version: 5.0

This article describes how to install an SRX license after registering the product.

This article incorporates material formerly found in KB23991. Please update your bookmarks.

Install an SRX license.

After registering an SRX, you can configure the device. After the device is configured, an automated process queries the licensing server, then retrieves and installs the license.

Perform the procedure below to configure the device.

  1. Define the URL:

    set system license autoupdate url

This is usually included in the factory-default. It is enables the autoupdate function.

  2. Define the DNS and the Route to internet via default routing instance:

    set system name-server [dns ip-address]
    set routing-options static route next-hop [gateway ip-address]

Important: The default route for Internet access should be in the default routing instance. If not, the auto update feature will fail.

         3. Execute the following command:

request system license update

Check the license:

show system license

        4. [Option]  How to change the "renew" condition.

By default, the renew option (the license renewal lead time and checking interval) is as follows:

Interval = 24 hours
Before-expiration = 60 days

To change this option, add the following two lines in the configuration and commit.

set system license renew before-expiration <a>
set system license renew interval <b>

where <a> is the license renew lead time, prior to expiration, in days (0..60)
and <b> is the license checking interval in hours (1..336).

Note: The before-expiration and interval statements are both mandatory. If either of the two is not configured, then a commit error will be generated:

#set system license renew before-expiration 3
# commit check
[edit system license]
Missing mandatory statement: 'interval'
error: configuration check-out failed: (missing statements)

Modification History:
2019-06-07:  Added important note in step 2.
