How to troubleshoot GVRP for the EX Switches

Article ID: KB15174 KB Last Updated: 04 Mar 2017Version: 2.0
This purpose of this article is to provide an overview of how to troubleshoot GVRP for the EX series Switch.  It assumes that STP is properly up and running on your system.

Steps for troubleshooting GVRP:

1. Check to see if GVRP is configured by reviewing configuration under protocols stanza:

{master:0}[edit protocols]
root@L5-23-4200# show
igmp-snooping {
vlan all;
lldp {
interface all;
lldp-med {
interface all;
gvrp {
interface ge-0/0/0.0;

2. Check GVRP timers.  The following values are the default timers for GVRP.  These timers are configurable under the "protocol gvrp" stanza.

[edit protocols]
juniper# run show gvrp timers
GVRP timers (ms)
Join : 200
Leave : 600
LeaveAll : 10000

3. Check GVRP statistics and ensure that the counters are incrementing.

[edit protocols]
juniper# run show gvrp statistics
GVRP statistics
Join Empty received : 44
Join In received : 0
Empty received : 0
Leave In received : 0
Leave Empty received : 0
LeaveAll received : 1
Join Empty transmitted : 44
Join In transmitted : 0
Empty transmitted : 19
Leave In transmitted : 0
Leave Empty transmitted : 0
LeaveAll transmitted : 42

4.) Check that interfaces appear in GVRP participating vlans

[edit protocols]
juniper# run show vlans 100
Name Tag Interfaces
vlan100 100
ae0.0, ae16.0, ge-0/0/2.0, xe-3/0/0.0*

5. Check to see if the GVRP protocol is sending and receiving on GVRP interface

juniper# run monitor traffic interface xe-3/0/0
verbose output suppressed, use <detail> or <extensive> for full protocol decode
Address resolution is ON. Use <no-resolve> to avoid any reverse lookup delay.
Address resolution timeout is 4s.
Listening on xe-3/0/0, capture size 96 bytes
