[NFX] How to identify if my NFX-250 is running NextGen (NG) or Non-NextGen Software

Article ID: KB37304 KB Last Updated: 15 Aug 2021Version: 2.0

In the NFX Hardware portfolio, NFX-250 is the only platform that is capable of running either Non-NextGen (NFX-2) or NextGen (NFX-3) software. The other platforms run only the NextGen software.

This article helps users identify whether their NFX-250 platform is running NextGen or Non-NextGen software.

The following steps can help identify the NFX software family that is currently installed on your device:

  1. If your NFX-250 device is running software earlier than Junos OS Release 19.1R1, it is Non-NextGen. The NextGen architecture for NFX-250 was made available from Junos OS Release 19.1R1. If the software that is currently running is Junos OS Release 19.1R1 or later, proceed to Step 2.
  2. From the default CLI, run the show chassis fpc pic-status command:

    1. If your device is running the NextGen code, you will see two FPCs as shown below, one in Slot-0 and one in Slot-1:
root@NextGen> show chassis fpc pic-status

Slot 0 Online NFX250-S1
  PIC 0 Online 10x10/100/1000 Base-T-2x1G SFP-2x10G SFP+
Slot 1 Online FPC
PIC 0 Online VSRX DPDK GE
  1. If your device is running the Non-NextGen code, this command will not work.

root@jdm> show chassis
syntax error, expecting <command>.

For in-depth comparison of CLI differences between NFX-2 and NFX-3 software, refer to KB35695 - [NFX] CLI Syntax Differences Between nfx-2 and nfx-3 Software.

Note:  The following is beyond the scope of this article. However, you may want to check the status of the FPC on your non-NextGen NFX-250 after the above exercise. Take the following steps:

  1. Switch to the JCP CLI from the default JDM CLI:

    root@jdm> ssh vjunos0
  2. Run the 'show chassis fpc pic-status' to view the FPC status:

    root@jcp> show chassis fpc pic-status
    Slot 0 Online (null)
      PIC 0 Online 10x10/100/1000 Base-T-2x1G SFP-
