What is the function of the VLAN1 interface?

What is the function of the VLAN1 interface?

The VLAN1 interface is only used for transparent mode operation and has two main purposes.

  1. Provide an address for managing the device
  2. Terminate VPN traffic when the device is in transparent mode.

The VLAN1 interface has the same configuration and management abilities as a physical interface with the exceptions of setting the physical link to "down".  It will only appear as "down" when there are no interfaces in a Layer 2 zone or the interfaces that are in the Layer 2 zone are down.  Also, bandwidth cannot be set on the VLAN1 interface.
